Study Load & Time Crunch

The study load in law school is unparalleled. Students must read through thousands of dense, lengthy, and often convoluted casebooks and hornbooks just to grasp the concepts their professors discuss. Most of this reading is done using physical books, with few alternatives like audiobooks or video-based learning methods. The sheer volume of material to read, process, and understand within tight deadlines leaves little time for critical thinking, asking relevant questions, or reflecting on the meaning and purpose of the study materials.

Memorizing Rules

Memorizing rules is an incredibly stressful part of law school. Each class typically involves learning and retaining hundreds of rules with exact precision—one misstep or incorrect word can undermine an entire analysis. It’s particularly challenging to memorize concepts that haven’t been experienced in real-life contexts. While mnemonics can be helpful, students often find themselves spending more time creating them than engaging with the material in ways that build comprehension and ease of application.

Limited Teaching Methods

Law school teaching methods are predominantly lecture-based, often accompanied by basic slides. These slides frequently contain full paragraphs, which are not visually optimized for retention, comprehension, or understanding. Interactive or visually engaging learning tools—such as graphics, audiobooks, or activities—are rarely utilized. This lack of variety makes learning especially challenging for neurodivergent and disabled students who benefit from alternative teaching styles.

Exams

Exams are a significant source of stress due to the volume of information students must recall, the steps involved in legal analysis, and the challenge of presenting ideas clearly and concisely. Many students don’t realize that a core focus of law school is developing legal communication skills—written, oral, and organizational. Exams are designed to assess not only knowledge but also the ability to process complex data and present it in a clear, structured format. Without adequate training in legal communication, exams become even more daunting, especially for those who have spent the majority of their time merely trying to understand and memorize the material.
